The ALEC is a free educational conference mainly for middle and high school students and their parents in the Greater Sacramento area. However, interested individuals from within and outside of the Sacramento area are also welcome to register and attend. The conference provides participants access to social, educational, and economic resources and services that enable them to be active members in the global society. The conference schedule is usually from 8am to 4pm and includes both informative and interactive workshops, games & entertainment, free lunch, prizes, academic awards, and more! The ALEC was founded in 2006 by a visionary educator, Khonepheth Lily Liemthongsamout, who has been an employee of Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) for over 10 years and is also an active leader in the Lao community. Funding for the ALEC has been mainly provided by the SCUSD. Additional financial support comes from Twin Rivers Unified School District and donations from local businesses and individuals made to Lao American Advancement Organization (LAAO). All memberships are completely voluntary, thus the ALEC is truly the result of how members are giving back to the community. |
| Mission Lao Americans access to professional services to ensure the community members’ full participation and advancement in a global The Lao American Advancement Organization (LAAO) is a US-based grass-roots not for profit organization dedicated to providing society. LAAO recognizes the truly diverse and multi-faceted nature of the Lao Americans and strives to create a community of acceptance through the pursuit of educational achievement, cultural development, and social support services, as well as recreational programs. Vision By the year 2013, the LAAO will be an advancing organization and will have in place the board, staff, facilities, and financial resources necessary to make it one of the most effective Lao American community development agency in the United States of America. Statement of Business Activities LAAO will establish a comprehensive educational achievement program focusing on improving the academic achievement of Lao American students in kindergarten to college. In partnerships with educational institutions and community-based organizations, the program will provide prevention, intervention, and enrichment educational services. These educational services will include outreaching, tutoring, and mentoring. The program will also provide scholarships, enrichment activities (i.e. study trips, academic competitions, and technology/innovative projects), educational conferences/institutes, and on-going publications (i.e. website, newspaper, magazine, and radio). The Annual Lao Educational Conference will be a major venue for promoting and disseminating resources and services to the Lao community. LAAO will also establish a progressive cultural development program focusing on maintaining and advancing the rich culture of the Lao people in America. We will work closely with other community-based organizations to ensure that traditionally held festivals (i.e. Lao New Year and other traditional/religious holidays) continue to thrive in the Lao community. Such celebrations will not only serve to maintain the richness of the Lao culture, but will also continue to provide opportunities for community networking. LAAO will provide both direct and in-direct services and financial support to projects aimed at preserving and advancing the Lao language, arts, and history. These projects will include research, documentation, and instruction of the Lao language, literature, history, traditional dances, musical instruments, songs, silk weaving, etc. In order to adequately address the pervasive cultural, linguistic, and economic challenges being faced by Lao-Americans in the process of acculturation and advancement in the mainstream society, LAAO will take a proactive approach to ensure equitable access to high quality social support services by all community members. We will provide both direct and in-direct social support services. Our direct support services will include counseling for troubled youths and dysfunctional families; job/career placement and training; mental health and elderly services; adults/parents education (i.e. Parenting, ESL, Citizenship, and Advocacy classes); as well as translation and transportation services. Our in-direct roles will be advocating, gathering, and disseminating resources and services in ways that are culturally and linguistically responsive to the needs of the community. In order to promote a healthy lifestyle and develop athletes within the Lao community, LAAO will establish a recreational program that meets the needs of all age groups. We will support and organize intra- and inter-city and state competitions of various games/activities to promote community unity through sportsmanship. This is not necessarily a physical locale, but rather another form of support system that brings together diverse members of the Lao community to share their passions for athletics. Excelling athletes within the Lao community will also benefit from our scholarships and financial support services. LAAO will also provide a gymnasium equipped with adequate amenities and equipments for games/activities such as basketball, volleyball/kathaw, soccer, swimming, gymnastic, aerobic, yoga, martial arts, etc. |
